GRAFFITI (COLOUR AND TEXTURES)

I have chosen to look at graffiti for the colours used as I want to incorporate these types of vibrant colours, thoughts and emotions into my final response. I feel that with graffiti, depending on how you view, understand and capture it you can see the amount of time, effort, inspiration, thought and artistry involved in creating these pieces. You also get the disruptive and illegal tagging and graphic type of scrawl that ruins the true artists that perform in approved places.

To back up my statements above, the mention of Alan Turing (one of Britain's finest code breakers who assisted in defeating the German forces during the second world war) proves thought, it is inspirational, in that a man who was outed as gay during his military service, ruining his career and ultimately led to his suicide now helps to inspire the LGBT community.

In certain places around the world, this type of art is encouraged in pre-approved locations and local councils/governments record and whitewash so that these artists have a canvas to improve and show their professionalism.

"... ASPIRE 2 INSPIRE BEFORE YOU EXPIRE..."

These types of inspirational quotes hopefully lead to underprivileged people who live in less fortunate communities following their dreams and inspiring others to do the same.

Shoot:

Screenshots:

The good parts about this shoot was that I was able to take photos of the stuff I like and enjoy rather than the topics that we have been set. I have used elements from Martha's work however I have added my own twist onto it. I took the element of graffiti from her work but I have made them my own. I have used the brightness of her work in my images but I have also added in some black and white edits in as well to show off the skills of enhancing colour and desaturating an image.

There are many different ways I can present my work. I have chosen to display my work in multiple ways below so that I am confident when it comes to doing my final response.

Layering in a collage:

I wanted to see what some of my pictures would look like if they were in a collage with a textured layer over the top. I wanted to use a variety of different pictures as well as colours to see which one looked better and which looked slightly PhotoShopped.

Gallery:

I chose to set up my gallery in two parts. Part one is of colour and creations of graffiti rather than just defacing something. Part two is tagging and less masterpieces compared to the first gallery.

I wanted to set it up this way to show the different types of graffiti and the professional level in some compared to the others.

The elements that I have taken from Martha Cooper would be the style of graffiti. I have tried to include her take on how she captures the images. She mainly captures them face on and she more so captures colour compared to black and white.

I wanted to take the ideas from Martha but put my name to work in the sense that I wanted it to be represented as my own and not copy her work.

I wanted to put some of the colourful graffiti and some of my favourite images in a gallery and make them so that they were in black and white and colour next to them to show the difference that black and white creates compared to colour. This is like a before and after. I wanted to show off my skills by using a simple technique.

My favourite picture from them all would have to be either the first two of the pipe or the 9th and 10th one. I think these because even though they incorporate Martha Cooper's style, I have added my own unique twist and created an unusual viewpoint.

I chose these ways to present my work as a whole rather than just individual photos. I wanted to present them in different ways to show my skills but also because I wanted to see which way works best to present my work. I would have to say that I prefer presenting my work in a gallery because that way you can see how I have made my improvements and where the improvements needed to be made and which ones looked better. I chose to present my work at the end of shoot three because then I can see what works best with certain images and what I am most comfortable working with.
